Merry Christmas from the Chastains!

Merry Christmas from the Chastains! This quiet Christmas Eve our family got out and walked the streets of old town Tallinn, visited an Orthodox Church, said some prayers and had a bite to eat. Given our normal schedules, it was nice to spend some quiet, leisurely time together. We’ve intentionally planned a smaller Christmas this year given that we’ll be visiting the US in late January for missions conferences and fundraising.  It’s definitely going to be a white Christmas, and we’ve had fun going out and about for various events over the last week, but for a multitude of reasons this year, we’re all a bit melancholy around here. I didn’t think it was possible, but this year I think we miss our loved ones and home culture even more than usual. Our current sadness doesn’t mean that we don’t feel immensely blessed for the lives and work we have here in Eastern Europe, because we do. And we have come to learn that loneliness is a common part of this calling. But, I can’t help but be reminded that 2000 years ago there was another young family spending time far from home, facing trials and an unknown future far greater than our homesickness or financial difficulties on the field.  And the greatest love of all was birthed out of that situation.  A love so great that it conquered the darkest death.  A love so perfect that it draws each of us to venture out beyond ourselves, deeper and deeper into its truth and freedom. So as we gather to celebrate the birth of our Savior, know that we are thinking of you.  Missing you.  Loving you from afar.  Thanking God for you and your families. We deeply and sincerely thank you for your prayers, your support and your friendship during this season and the new year to come. Quoting Tiny Tim, “God bless us, every one!” Blessings and Peace, Charlie, Miki, Isabel, Jasper and Celia

Just wanted to say that your newsletter hit home with us, as we have had a season of feeling extremely alone and sad at being apart from loved ones and our culture for the holidays. I don’t know why this year has hit us harder, but it has. And trying to not let it show too much, since we want Sarah to still have the anticipation and excitement of the holidays. But we miss the boys and our families so much, the traditions, etc. So we feel for you, and with you. Loving you from afar…
