“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” Romans 8:14-16
The Word of God, the only word which stands forever, tells us that we who are filled with the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ are children of God. It says that God came Himself to save us, and that He condemned the sin that enslaved us, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us.
The righteousness we have through Jesus means that we have been made right with God. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we are cleansed of our sin and are justified so that we may enter into the very presence of our Creator, our heavenly Father. Before we belonged to our mother and father, we belonged to Him. We were His first.
God’s Word says that in our own power we are completely incapable of obtaining freedom from sin and death. But through Jesus Christ, because of what He has already done, we are set free from the law of sin and death. There is no longer any condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
We remember the very last words of Jesus Christ, in the moment he took his last breath, when He spoke, “It is finished.” We can guess that He was speaking those words to the people around Him, or to His Father, or perhaps even to Himself. But we must not forget who else Jesus was addressing with that statement – the very enemy of our souls. Jesus Christ was most certainly speaking the one who until that moment had been waging a war of terror and darkness against mankind since our fall. In that moment, God won. Satan’s kingdom of darkness was finished.
And the devil knew it. He knew he had been defeated. And he knows it to this day (which is why he always submits to and flees from the presence and name of Jesus Christ). And so in these last days, his last ditch effort is not to try to take on God, but is to convince us, God’s children, that Calvary never really happened – at least not for you and me.
Because he knows that all that is necessary for the salvation of our souls in Jesus Christ is simply that we believe (John 3:16). So do you believe?
Jesus Christ said that the sheep would listen only to the voice of the Shepherd (John 10). Whose voice are we listening to today?
Paul said there is now no condemnation for those of us who believe in Jesus, who are in Him (Romans 8). Why are we who have received salvation through the blood of Christ continuing to let the enemy deceive us with his lies that we still aren’t good enough? That we still are just that broken, un-lovable, failure of a person we were before we knew Him? I can assure you, he is a thief, and the words he speaks are lies.
Let’s be courageous to take up the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to silence our enemy, and to feed on the truth of who we are, who He is, and on what He has done. Amen.
